2. Day Excursion Out Of Addis Ababa:
2.1 Melka Kunture Archaeological site where fossils of pre-historic
age (nearly 2 million year old) have been discovered. Stone
tools dating 1.5 million years old are other discoveries of
this area. Few Kms. drive from thispoint, Adadi Mariam Church can be reached.
This Church is believed to date back to the time of Lalibela
and gives a good image of the Lalibela rock hewn Churches of the
12th century.
2.2 Debre Libanos Church and Blue
Nile Gorge (Full Day)
The Blue Nile Gorge is one of the most spectacular gorges
in the world; bigger 0than the Grand Canyon in the USA. To
reach the Blue Nile Gorge the road passes through green-land
plateau and after one hundred kms. drive is Debre Libanos
Monastery, which dates back to 13th century. The endemic mammal
Gelada Baboon and Lammergeyer as well as Rupples Vultures
are all habitats of the area. The Portuguese Bridge of the
16th century is also in the vicinity and worth a visit. Continue
to drive through villages and farm lands till you reach the
gorge, which is about one mile wide and one mile deep, taking
about a 45 minutes drive to reach the riverbed. Picnic lunch
on either side of the river. Early afternoon drive back to
Addis to arrive before dusk.
2.3 Nazareth/Sodore Resort. (Full
day)
Sodere is a resort 126 kms. South of Addis Ababa. The majority
of the populations living in these areas make their living
from agriculture. The main grain that is grown in this area
is “teff” from which the staple food “injera”
is made. After Nazareth, Sodore is only 15 minutes drive and
swimming in the Olympic size pool filled with warm mineral
water is very tempting before lunch.
The majestic Awash River passes near by the swimming pool
and Hippos and Crocodiles can be observed from time to time.
The huge revering trees offer shade and shelter to entertaining
Monkeys and Birds of varied species. After lunch visiting
the garden of the hotel is worthwhile. Late afternoon, drive
back to Addis Ababa to arrive before dark.
